The Path

Mahatma Gandhi

Passages for Meditation

I know the path: it is strait and narrow.
It is like the edge of a sword.

I rejoice to walk on it.
I weep when I slip.

God’s word is:
“He who strives never perishes.”

I have implicit faith in that promise.

Though, therefore, from my weakness
I fail a thousand times,
I shall not lose faith.

Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948) was an Indian spiritual and political leader known for satyagraha, his systematic method for resolving conflict through nonviolence. This passage is published in Easwaran’s spiritual anthologies, “God Makes the Rivers to Flow” and “Timeless Wisdom.” The audio recording is by Eknath Easwaran.
