Eknath Easwaran's Commentary
It is so easy to repeat the mantram – Jesus, Jesus, or Rama, Rama, or whichever one we have chosen – that at first most of us cannot believe that it is charged with great power. Only after we use it for a while do we begin to see that repeating the mantram is not just a mechanical exercise; it is a direct line to the Lord, the Self within, somewhat like picking up the phone and calling him collect. We don’t have to make any promises or commitments; we only have to repeat the mantram when we are agitated – angry, afraid, speeded up, or caught in worries or regrets – and the Self opens a little door to the reserves of our deeper consciousness.
